Chimney Sweeping is Changing

Google+TwitterEmailFacebook

The start to the chimney cleaning portion of our sister company – Lindemann Chimney Service – started when my father bought his first August West System in 1979. I remember the day when the equipment arrived. Im certain he did not read the instructions. He just firedup the vacuum and began cleaning our fireplace. Next came the Top Hat and Tails. Next came the jokes from neighbors that he had totally lost it this time. So there began thejourney and the foundation was layed for our chimney cleaning business.

In the early years before SNEWS and Sweeping there were only a couple resources to learn (one of them being the Sootsayer.) Youd be able to pull a nugget or two from each issue that generally came from some sweep learning something the hard way and sharing it for others. We bid jobs and then figured out how to do them. If we only took on the jobs we knew how to do we would have starved. Education and training was always on the job.

Companies like Worcester brush and Rutland stepped up to fill the growing need for tools. However they could do only so much and many went to a local machine shop to fabricate their own tools.

As I look where we are today in relation to then it is amazing. There is a wealth of information and tools available to us today. Its essential to stay on top of the latest the industry has to offer. The companies that are leveraging the latest improvements are the ones that are surviving in tough times.

To stay abreast on the latest tools, read articles like this. Subscribe to every industry publication you can. For SNEWS click here. For Sweeping click here). Partner with your distributors and vendors to see what you should be aware of. Invest in the great tools. Over the years I have never regretted spending to get the very best tools.

Staying abreast the latest technology is tougher. There are technologies that come out daily that we can use in our business. Some of them could be game changers. For example, a few years ago we used Google Earth to bid gutter cleaning jobs. Huh? A Few years ago we realized that the satellite imagery that is available was sufficient enough for us to create an estimate. Wow! Overnight we saved hundreds of trips and thousands of dollars. Did you know some phones use Geo-tagging now? Geo tagging basically adds the exact location to every picture you take. This saves hours of work filing your in the field pictures.
